A prodigal son returns and a new take on 20 methods
morgothan | 3 06 2008A student who was taking classes at the school before I started has come back to the school. He had moved to Orlando, and has now moved back into the area. I’m really glad he came back to the school. He seems like a really cool guy. We did Lien Bu, and 20 Methods single man. For being gone for so long his stance work was great, and he had the forms pretty good. Some rust, but not much.
In doing 20 methods with him I thought of a new throw in the form. Towards the end of the form, right after the shoulder lock you bring your arm back up as a chop to the neck/head. I always thought of this as a strike, a clean hit like a back fist to the face. Looking at it again last night I saw the simplicity of a throw in it. The only changes to the movement are to get in a little deeper on the opponent, so your leg can act as a fulcrum, then when you go for the strike turn more and push the opponent over your leg. Since you should be in a solid bow and arrow stance, your knee will be right behind there knee causing them to buckle as you push them back, this gives you the edge to continue the movement and take them down to the ground.
As for how to pull it off in reality, not just form. I figure you would have to be clenched, then break your one arm free while holding the other one. With your free arm, roll down the opponents shoulder for the shoulder lock. This forces the opponent to bend forward, and try and fight back. When he starts to push back, bring the arm locking the shoulder up to the throat, take a small half step to ensure proper positioning, and bring them down.
